Excellence Initiative of the federal and states governments
The German Universities Excellence Initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Research Foundation is a twofold mission: It aims to promote top-level research and to improve the quality of German universities and research institutions.
Phase 1 and 2 of the Excellence Initiative
Between 2006 and 2011, in the first program phase, a total of € 1.9 billion in additional funding for the three funding lines of the initiative was made available. The three funding areas comprise: Graduate Schools to promote young researchers, Excellence Clusters to establish competitive research and training facilities, and Institutional Strategies aimed at developing top-level university research.
In May 2009, the federal and state governments decided to continue the Excellence Initiative beyond 2012 for another five years, providing a total of € 2.7 billion in additional funding. This second phase of the program was started in March 2010. The TUD believes to be able to compete in this second program phase.
