Research

Researchers from all over the world come to Dresden – to live here and to work here. Universities, colleges, research institutions and companies involved in research and development can be found in all parts of the city. Short distances foster co-operation and interaction. More than 40,000 young people and postgraduates study here, and they are a constant stimulus that drives the city.

Very basic questions – and answers

Research on very basic questions benefits from interdisciplinary teams and approaches. The TU Dresden and non-university institutions combine their forces. Regenerative medicine, materials science, biotechnology, nanoanalysis, engineering and systems engineering are the key fields of the sciences in Dresden. Researchers from the social sciences and humanities study matters that are key factors of change – in politics, business, research, culture, and technology.

Develop ideas, innovation, and new products

The idea is to go beyond basic research and translate scientific findings into innovations that are ready for the market. Dresden is a hotbed for innovative ideas originating new products or services and new start-ups. Companies like Novaled and heliatek are just two successful examples out of many. In particular, the Fraunhofer Institutes, which focus on applied research, are a major stimulus for innovative technologies in the region.

Kick-off for technology transfer and exchange

To make sure that science and business constantly exchange knowledge, technologies, and property rights, there is a strong alliance of partners for this transfer: The Research promotion and transfer unit of the TU Dresden, the Dresden exists initiative to promote start-ups, TUDAG and GWT-TUD GmbH.
